In this essay, I will make an analysis of the decision making that was performed by some of the main individuals, which eventually helped to bring the crew back home safely. Saturn V, Lunar module, Command module were the parts of the rocket. The command center in NASA also helped a lot in this mission. They helped them coordinate and fix problems that they had in the rocket. Apollo 10 just orbited the moon but the information they got from the mission Apollo 10 helped them understand that they could actually land a spacecraft own the moon so Apollo 11 was a success. Apollo 13 is a movie about a space mission that involved 3 astronauts.
The movie is based off a real event and portrays the actual event very well. The Apollo 13 mission was to go on the moon after Neil Armstrong had been on it through the Apollo 11 mission. However, this mission started to seem like a nightmare and deadly for the astronauts after things started to go wrong with the rocket. The astronauts get told to turn the rocket off so they preserve the power. The team on Earth started to make plans on how they would get the astronauts home safely while the astronauts struggle to survive in the rocket without power. After a while the team figures out a way and they plan out a return plan for the astronauts. The astronauts safely returned home. On April 11, , three men were scheduled to fly to and land on the moon. The mission labeled Apollo Alan Shepard, Stuart Roosa, and Edgar Mitchell made-up the original crew members of Apollo 13, but because of an inner-ear surgery, Alan Shepard felt unprepared to fly Apollo Jim Lovell, the commander of Apollo 14, was then approached and asked if he would mind switching flights with Shepard.
Jim did not think there would be a great difference between the two flights and wanted to get back to the moon. He agreed and his crew began training. Lovell and Kluger, Jim's crew included Fred Haise, Ken Mattingly, and himself. They gladly accepted their mission. Little did these men know, however, their flight was going to be riddled with problems and be forever remembered for them. The three men should have known that their mission was fated for mishaps when at the last minute Ken Mattingly was removed from the crew because of an accidental exposure to German measles. He was replaced by the "playboy" Jack Swigert. Jack, who was not taken very seriously by the public, became a huge asset to the crew of Apollo There was an accident on the spacecraft 2 days after it was launched into space.
The accident was that wires were exposed inside the oxygen tanks through manufacturing and testing errors before the launch. The night of August 13, a spark from the exposed wires caused a fire, which ripped apart one oxygen tank and damaged the other inside the Odyssey, spacecraft. The astronauts were losing oxygen fast. In our project we had to find a solution to get the ping pong ball from one side of the gap to the other. Some similarities with Apollo 13 and our project was that we all had to find a solution of a problem and we all had one chance. Also our grades would be in danger as well. Some other similarities that we had with Apollo 13 was we all had limited time and supplies.
Apollo One is the name given to the AS spacecraft after it was destroyed by fire during a training exercise. January 27, the crew of Apollo commonly known as Saturn began training for the first Apollo mission. On this mission they were going to orbit Earth, they were scheduled to launch February The AS mission was scheduled for the first quarter of , having already missed a target date for the last quarter of The shuttle was placed on launch pad 34 at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It was sitting on a Saturn 1B rocket.
For their rocket they had three parts to it. It carries three astronauts in a 62 mile orbit above the moon. HOME ESSAYS Apollo 13 Essay. Apollo 13 Essay Good Essays. Open Document. We're bored to tears down here. At 55 hours the crew held a TV broadcast for 49 minutes where they showed off their living conditions and how they worked in weightless situations. Nine minutes after the broadcast mission control instructed that Odyssey to give their oxygen tanks a stir and moments later oxygen tank No. The eruption then damaged oxygen tank No.
Debris from the explosion was blocking the view and made it impossible to sight stars as navigational points. Mission control developed a procedure to use the sun as an alignment star. Ken Mattingly, in mission control, ran many simulation to figure out how to power up the command module quickly for reentry. The power of the command module was cut off and it had been in a long, cold sleep. Ken Mattingly and Mission control were able to come up with a procedure, to fire up the command module, in three short days compared to the three months it would usually take The Apollo crew may have not been able to complete their original mission, but when they were faced with a serious problem the crew proved that they could handle it.
The near disaster reminded everyone of the peril of space travel. They were successful in the sense that NASA was able to work through this effectively and save the lives of the three men that were brave enough to go on the mission. Continue Reading. In actuality him and his crew were not originally scheduled to fly to the moon until the Apollo 14 mission, but were moved up on the schedule due to the previous crew leader receiving an ear infection.
Unfortunately only a couple days before the launch it is found that Mattingly was exposed to measles and forced to stay off the Apollo 13 flight and replaced with Swigert from the back up crew. A few days later Lovell and his crew take off on the Apollo 13 mission. At first all is well until the second oxygen tank explodes, causing many problems for the crew; the most potent problem being that the crew was losing oxygen fast. Luckily, due to much ingenuity by the crew and mission control, the crew is able to arrive safely to earth without the deaths of any astronauts. Although flawed in the technical events, there are many realities that the movie Apollo 13, successfully presents.
One of these realities being the representation of supporting details. The movie Apollo 13, Is also quite precise when it comes to presenting the dates and places of important events revolving around the Apollo 13 mission. This is shown when the creators precisely show an accurate date and place of launch which was at Kennedy Space Center on April 11, Another important date and location that was accurately presented was where the lunar module landed which was, in the Pacific Ocean, on April 17, Finally, the creators also accurately showed the behavior of the astronauts on the mission, which can be seen in numerous virtues including the fear and courage of all astronauts on the mission.
The creators of Apollo 13, made a majestic achievement in accurately portraying the number of events surrounding Apollo 13 with the depth of the story that they were trying to represent. Despite the realities the creators were able to show, they failed to demonstrate the development of the plans the Apollo 13 crew used to survive. In the movie it displays mission control developing the plan to make the resources of the lunar module last for three men for four days, even though in reality NASA had a preliminary lifeboat already simulated, whereas in the movie, to increase drama, made it seem as though mission control had made up the plan on the spot.
Also in the movie there was an error with the carbon dioxide filter in which the movie made seem as if mission control solved the problem, but in actuality they had called in a former astronaut, Joe Kerwin Universe Today, Mattingly. Unfortunately these flaws made Apollo 13 less accurate, but it is still important to recognize that this movie is still the most accurate portrayal of Apollo 13 seen thus far. In the movie Apollo 13, the creators also failed in a few regards when it came to the details of what happened on Apollo One of these errors is first seen when Swigert receives orders from mission control to mix the oxygen and hydrogen tanks.
In the movie immediately after he does this the crew hears a loud bang, whereas in truth they did not in fact hear the bang until a couple minutes after the mixing of the tanks had taken place. One of the most shocking facts however is that Al Shepherd was not moved back to Apollo 14 because of an ear infection, but in fact because of his lack of training, and NASA trying to allow him more time to train before actually heading off into space. Another flaw seen is that the crawler which carries the Saturn V out to the launch pad in the movie was surprisingly pretty quiet despite the fact that the crawler, in reality, is extremely noisy. Another anomaly that comes into play, is in the movie the Apollo 13 launch starts immediately as the countdown reaches zero, however in the real event, Apollo 13 launched before the countdown reached zero.
Another small flaw one might notice is that given the times during the movie it can be seen that the phases of the moon are wrong. Although unfortunate that the creators of Apollo 13 missed these details, they still did an incredible job accurately depicting the events of mission within the time they were given for the movie Philip Chien. The reviewer chose the movie, Apollo 13 for quite mediocre reasons. Although the reviewer chose the movie on account of mostly foolish reasons he redeems himself with the notion that he knew that Apollo 13 was a huge historical event involving a great land mark for American ingenuity given the great minds it took to survive the accident.
Also, in retrospect, the reviewer was quite pleased with the movie as a whole not only was it for the most part extremely precise, but also the costumes matched the legitimate uniforms of the Apollo 13 crew almost perfectly Google Images. Overall, the reviewer thought the film was extremely relevant to American history, and given its accuracies was a very entertaining movie. The creators of Apollo 13 were very thorough when it came to important events, but were lacking when it came to the details of the splendid Apollo 13 mission. Regardless of its deficiencies when it came to detail, the makers of Apollo 13 spared no expense to get the main ideas across while still keeping the audience interested.
The ingenuity of this should not be over looked, for what is the point of history if no one cares enough to learn it, which is exactly what the creators of the movie did by giving Americans the motivation to learn about our own history by making the learning enjoyable. Therefore, the movie Apollo 13 accomplishes its goal perfectly by successfully teaching history. D This essay was written by a fellow student. Aboard Apollo 13, 3 astronauts—Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise—were seeking to. What exactly was Apollo 11? Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that allowed the first men to land on the moon.
Through the use of physics, many of these events can be proven to be accurate. To see how these laws are applied to the film Apollo 13, we can first look at the initial launching of the ship from earth. With that in mind, the shuttle in the beginning is at rest as it waits to launch and would remain there until a force was exerted upon it to cause it to move. The force in this instance would be the ships boosters acting on it to push it up and away from the launching pad and into space. This take off and power used to propel the ship is an externally imposed force placed on the resting ship.
Another example of Newtons first law in the film can be seen during the separation in space of the ship and its boosters. The ship carrying the astronauts continues its straight path, while the 4 pieces of the craft behind can be seen traveling off into space in their own respective directions. Our writers can help you with any type of essay. For any subject Get your price How it works. This leads into the ship, a smaller massed object, needing to experience a larger acceleration of force to break free of the earth, a much larger massed object. However, since the ship itself has an assumed high mass due to the size as seen in film, it will have, like all objects, a resistance to change in motion. For the Apollo 13 shuttle to take off successfuly, there needs to be enough force applied to the mass of the ship to propel it from its state of rest.
This can also be applied to the re-entry of Apollo As the ships gets closer to earth, the pull of the earth gravitational field speeds up the acceleration of the ship. As it re-enters the earths atmosphere, it slows down due to air molecules, however, the lost momentum converts to heat, which is why the Apollo 13 technicians were concerned about the re-entry, as they feared the heat resistant paneling could have been damaged Deziel, The biggest issue Apollo 13, and the reason it failed in its mission to land on the moon, was the explosion of one of its oxygen tanks leading to the failure of many of its systems and for the ship to move out of control. While a tragic turn of events for the crew and NASA, this too can be explained through physics. When you put force on a chair to move it, it also is exerting a force back, however, weaker then your own, which is why its able to be moved.
The same applies to the explosion of the oxygen tank causing the out of control movements we see in the film on the ship. As the oxygen escapes the ship, the force of it being expelled causes the ship to move forward in the opposite direction to the oxygen. Looking at the astronauts and how they move in space, they rely on the walls and different points of contact to propel themselves through the ship. This means that the further away from the earths mass an object is, the less force will be exerted onto said object. Looking at the film, as the craft is carrying the crew to the moon, this law comes into play.
In one of the scenes we see a monitor with a projected pathway that the Apollo 13 craft is taking, going from the earth to the moon in a loop. Then, as shown in the films drawn model, the Apollo 13 vessel will be slung back in the direction of earth due to the moons gravitational pull. This law is also demonstrated in the vessels re-entry back to earth, as the closer the crew got to earth, the force of the gravitational pull on the ship increased causing it to re-enter the atmosphere. In the film, we see the decent of the ship as it comes back from space and see the parachutes deploy in order to slow down the falling ship for a safe landing for its crew. This process of slowing down and deacceleration too can be explained by looking at physics.
As the ship is falling back to earth, the velocity at which they are falling would prove deadly, even though they would be slowing down due to air-resistance. Something to note during the duration of the film was their use of the scientific method in relation to the issues the crew and those back on earth used to assess their troubling situation. During the initial chaos created, scientists on the ground were scrambling to determine the cause of the failures, throwing out the ideas of a possible instrumentational error to the vessel having been hit by a meteor CITE NSTA. While these ideas were being thrown out, one of the crew members noticed the ship was expelling something- oxygen- into space.
This observation alerted those on ground, who now had a better understanding of the situation taking place on the shuttle and allowed them to further aid the crew to ensure their wellbeing and survival.
